This issue of Advances in Tourism Studies presents a collection of recent empirical and theoretical contributions that advance our understanding of tourism development, visitor behavior, and sustainable management in Indonesian and regional contexts. The five featured articles integrate qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches that highlight current challenges and innovations across linguistic, cultural, and managerial dimensions of the tourism sector.
This issue brings together diverse perspectives on tourism and development from across Asia. From China, Zaidan Mufaddhal examines how artificial intelligence transforms personalization and guest loyalty in hospitality. From the Philippines, Dustin Tarinque Loreño investigates sustainable tourism practices through community voices in Palawan and Bohol. From Indonesia, Baiq El-Badriati explores women’s empowerment in Lombok’s tourism development, Indra Irjani Dewijanti analyzes agro-tourism as a pathway for economic opportunity in Papua, and St. Hatidja studies how fishing households in Sulawesi negotiate livelihoods amid tourism growth.
This issue explores diverse intersections of tourism, culture, and sustainability across Asia. The articles examine the emerging role of specialty coffee in enhancing pilgrimage tourism in Makkah and Madinah, community narratives of overtourism in Bali, trust and informality in Indonesia’s digital tourism marketplace, negotiations of authenticity in Balinese heritage tourism, and local responses to climate change and coastal erosion in Lombok. Together, these contributions highlight how tourism economies are being reshaped by cultural practices, community resilience, environmental challenges, and global transformations
This issue presents studies on rural tourism innovation, small island sustainability, digital media, and AI in tourism. Articles explore how Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in Klaten empower communities through ecotourism, how small island residents negotiate tourism-driven environmental change, how social media shapes Taiwan’s destination image, and how artificial intelligence reshapes jobs and skills in tourism through human–AI collaboration. Together, these papers highlight the intersections of community empowerment, ecological resilience, digital representation, and technological transformation in contemporary tourism.
This issue features studies on geotourism strategies in Prambanan, resilience of small island tourism post-COVID, authenticity in cultural tourism, gendered roles in community-based tourism, and religious–spiritual travel in Indonesia, offering fresh insights into sustainability, identity, and local empowerment.
This issue features diverse contributions from Indonesia, Taiwan, France, and Saudi Arabia, highlighting interdisciplinary perspectives in tourism research. Indonesian scholars examine geotourism development at Teletubbies Hill and analyze visitor behavior in coffee shop and heritage tourism contexts. A collaborative study between Taiwan and Saudi Arabia explores how emotionally-intelligent AI enhances cultural tourism experiences. Meanwhile, a France–Indonesia joint review investigates a decade of global literature on community participation in sustainable tourism. Together, these articles reflect a rich cross-national dialogue on innovation, cultural preservation, and inclusive tourism development.
